Poker: a game of chance or a game of skill?
Because you don’t know what cards you will be dealt and at the same time you have to use your head to make the best hand, many people ask themselves this question.
Casinos are full of games of chance and that is one of the reasons why they are so much fun. However, among them is one game that generates debate among gamblers: poker.
How to play poker?
First of all, we want to give you a quick overview of how poker is played. The truth is that it is very easy, you literally just have to wait for your five cards to be dealt to you and with them try to form one of the 10 possible hands. Whoever makes the highest scoring hand wins.
Based on the above, a study revealed that whether or not you are victorious in a game depends more on the cards you are dealt than on your individual skills. This means that even if you are a super-smart professional player and are good at picking up the cards with which you could make a better hand, you are not guaranteed to win.
The study selected 150 people and divided them into two groups: one made up of pure amateur players and the other of experienced players. Six contestants were then seated at each table, three of them good at poker and the other three not so good. Finally, they were not dealt cards completely at random, but two (one good and one bad) were dealt better than average cards, two others got average cards, and the other two had to deal with worse than average cards.
As the stakes were the same at all tables, the winnings of the not-so-good players were added up at the end, and the winnings of the expert players were added up as well. As the result was almost the same in both cases, it was concluded that the “pro” players did not outperform the average players.
Are skills important?
Another result that was reached after analysing the winnings of those who received good, not so good and bad cards, was that skills ARE important in reducing losses. Those skilled players who received bad cards did not win, but took advantage of their experience in the game to lose less money, while the inexperienced players let a little more money go.
Now that you’ve read all this, you may still be asking yourself, “So is poker a game of chance or a game of skill? Well, we’ll tell you right now that it’s a game of chance, but we recommend that you don’t get overconfident and try to play against expert players to see if you can beat them, especially if there’s a lot of money at stake.
